HNA Quarterly Survey - Fall 2009 ... Results are in!

On behalf of the Highland Neighborhood Association, and surrounding areas, I'd like to thank everyone for their participation in the survey. I have compiled the responses into a series of charts, which I hope make the survey results digestible for others. View the Survey Results.

At this point, I'd like to further ask those in the area who have contacts with various business owners, to direct their attention to the above URL, and realize the opportunity that may exist for them in and around our neighborhood.

2009 School Supply Fundraiser for T.A. Brown & Reilly Elementary - Results

On Wednesday, September 2, 2009, Dorothy Johns and Kitty Traylor presented T.A. Brown and Reilly Elementary Schools with checks totaling $334.78 to cap off the 2009 HNA School Supply Fund Raiser. As of the HNA quarterly meeting on September 1st, HNA raised a total of $334.78 for the fund raiser. Per the matching rules, checks for this amount were distributed equally to each school.

Unfortunately, the principals were not available to accept the checks in person. Therefore, the Clerk, Sheryl Bowie and Counselor, Yvonne Scales accepted for T.A. Brown, and the Clerk, Marissa Martinez and Librarian, Kathy Shaw accepted for Reilly. Both schools were overjoyed, to say the least. Reilly is having to take the refugees that have been housed in our neighborhood and the Federal government does not give them anything so they were very happy to get this money.

On behalf of the T.A. Brown Elementary, Reilly Elementary, Highland Officers, and most importantly the children, we'd like to extend a big THANK YOU to all HNA neighbors who donated towards this fund raiser making it a great success!

2009 School Supply Fundraiser for T.A. Brown & Reilly Elementary - Answer the Call!

The Highland Neighborhood Association (HNA) is sponsoring a fundraiser for school supplies for both T.A. Brown & Reilly Elementary starting Today through September 1st, 2009, and we are asking for your help!

HNA Pledge
HNA will match a total donation (of all HNA constituents) to support school supplies for both T.A. Brown & Reilly Elementary, up to $500. At which point, a final donation will be distributed equally to each school on behalf of the HNA.

How-To-Donate
Since this is a grass roots effort, we can only accept cash/check; however, for those who wish, names will be included in the next quarterly newsletter to thank those who donated for their generosity.

- Mail to the address on the right
- Email the officers to arrange a drop-off
- At the HNA Meeting on September 1^st, 2009.

4th of July Parade is tomorrow ... send us your pictures!

The parade starts at 9 a.m.on the 4th of July at the Dorothy Johns Triangle, it is located at Crestland & Meadowview. We go down Meadowview and up Northway, end at T.A. Brown School on the basketball court for song and refreshments.

If you happen to take pictures that you'd like to share with others on the website, please send an email to webmaster@highlandneighborhood.com and arrange to send your photos, and we'll get them up here sometime after the 11th (Out of town till then).

Here in Highland Neighborhood, we are all about trying to make the our local businesses successful. The better our local HNA businesses do, the more character and differentiation we see in Highland Neighborhood compared to other neighborhoods in Austin.

As a first attempt, we are calling on all Highland Neighborhood residents to nominate your favorite local businesses that are within/or near the Highland Neighborhood area. We hope that this information will not only help existing HNA residents; however, also help those new to the area find great local treasures in their neighborhood.

The Tradition Continues – Lamar Fest 2008 on October 24

Lamar Middle School will hold its annual fall festival, Lamar Fest, on Friday, October 24. The festival will be at Lamar Middle School from 6 to 9 p.m. Current, previous, and future Lamar students, their families and friends, as well as neighbors and community members are all invited to join the fun! This year’s festival promises an exciting evening of food, games, live music, and so much more!

Got game? If your competitive streak gets the best of you, try out the Amazon Extreme Obstacle Course, a new game featured at this year’s Lamar Fest. This race challenges two contestants to overcome menacing obstacles to reach the finish line first. If that doesn’t get your adrenaline pumping, take out your frustrations at the Car Bash or the Equalizer Tug-of-War. Need something a little more calm? Take a ride on the 27-foot giant slide, join the Pringle or soda toss, or take a stroll at the cake or stuffed animal walks.

Live music – Lamar Fest 2008 has it! Come out and enjoy live music by, you guessed it, Lamar teachers! Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime musical event! McCallum and Lamar student bands will also be rockin’ the festival crowd. Need I say more?

What’s a festival without great food? This year we have some new items including Frito pie, Jim-Jims, and bean and cheese tacos for the vegetarians out there. But, we didn’t forget all the old favorites like tacos, pizza, hot dogs, pickles, pretzels, ice cream, and candy.

Before the night ends, be sure to dunk your favorite teacher in the dunking booth, pick up some bling at the BlingBling booth, have your hair painted, or grab your friends for a photo in the photo booth.

Tickets are 50 cents each and go on sale during lunch at Lamar Middle School on Thursday, October 23, and Friday, October 24, and continue into the evening at the festival. Show your school spirit with a “Go Lamar Dawgs!” wristband, also on sale during lunch and at the festival.

There’s something for everyone at Lamar Fest 2008. We hope you will come out to support your middle school and join in the fun!
